I Love Coconut!

How much do I love coconut oil? Let me count the ways. Just kidding, we would be here all day. I could go on and on about all the uses for coconut oil. If you are wondering what my top few are I would say as a lotion and as a hair treatment. My girls both have very dry hair and once a week I coat their hair with coconut oil and and leave it for about a half an hour then wash it out with shampoo and warm water. I have also used it on burns and cuts to help the healing process.

My newest love for coconut comes in the form of  coconut milk. It’s a simple DIY leave in conditioner made from coconut milk. Intrigued? Lets get started.

Ingredients:

  • Coconut milk- I use coconut milk from the can.
  • Distilled Water- If you don’t have distilled water you can just make it. Boil water for about 5 minutes and then let it cool.
  • Essential Oils- I always use tea tree oil. My little’s are in school and lice can be a problem. Ever since I have used tea tree oil on their hair it has not been an issue in our home. It works! I also like to use vanilla oil. It gives it a yummy smell. Feel free to try other oils. Just remember you may want to test the oil on your skin before you add it in and spray it all over.

Now that we have our ingredients we just have to mix them together.

First, pour 1/4 cup of distilled water.

Next add 2 Tablespoonimg_20161230_152719s of coconut milk to the water.

Whisk together along with 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils. Like I said in the beginning, I like to use tea tree oil and vanilla oil. Although sometimes I like to change it up and use tea tree oil and lavender oil.

Once you have it all mixed, pour it into a small spray bottle. This conditioner should last about a week.  If you would like to make a larger batch you can but I would recommend freezing the extra conditioner in ice cube trays.

If you try it, please let me know what you think!

  1. Great idea! We will have to try it. Coconut oil is also great at eliminating lice. You apply it to kiddos hair and leave for 20 min and wash with shampoo. Repeat daily for 2 days. So much safer than chemicals.

    1. Great point! Before I knew about oils my little got lice. I used coconut oil, put on a shower cap and warmed her hair with a hair dryer. It worked like a charm!
